The economic future of the Uintah Basin is looking very bright thanks to the prospect of the proposed Uinta Basin Railway. Incident of Mysterious Man With Ignited Device Explained By Police

Things are not always what they seem. Vernal City Police Department utilized social media and asked for the public’s assistance on Monday morning in identifying a man in some security photos. The man is pictured setting something down in a parking lot that then starts on fire. Vernal PD did not offer any context to the photos but asked that anyone able to help identify the man or vehicle to please contact them.

East Fork Fire Update

Generally good news all around concerning the fires in Ashley National Forest. First, the Center Creek Trail Fire is posing no threat of moving and has limited fire behavior leading to there being only 12 firefighters assigned to it. For the East Fork Fire the firefighters have a continuous containment line that runs from the Bear Lake area on the Rock Creek Road all the way to Mackentire Draw.

Woman Dies in ATV Crash in Uintah County; Driver Impairment Suspected

An ATV accident in Uintah County resulted in a woman’s death early Sunday morning. The Uintah County Sheriff’s Office released the following: A 25 year old Ogden woman died early [Sunday] morning in a side-by-side crash near Iron Springs in Uintah County. Emergency personnel were dispatched to Red Cloud Loop Road near Iron Springs at approximately 1:30 a.m.

Hiker Fatally Injured After Fall While Attempting to Summit Kings Peak

A missing hiker’s body was located on Sunday after several days of searching. 25-year-old Kyle S. Wimpenny was declared a missing person last week after last being seen at his Boise, Idaho home on Sunday, September 13th. Kyle had planned to backpack to Kings Peak, located in Duchesne County in the High Uintas Wilderness Area, and was expected to return home by Wednesday, September 16th.

Utah Employment Report

Utah’s economy continues to improve despite the ongoing effects nationally due to the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the Department of Workforce Services, August’s seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate for the state of Utah was estimated at 4.1 percent with approximately 66,100 Utahns unemployed. The national unemployment rate lowered from 10.2 percent in July to 8.4 percent in August.

Moffat County Man Guilty of Child Sex Abuse Sentenced

A Moffat County man was sentenced to 23 years in prison in Moffat County District Court. Richard Barnes pleaded guilty to felony Knowing or Reckless Child Abuse Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury and to felony Attempt to Commit Sexual Assault on a Child. According to the Colorado 14th Judicial District, the plea and sentence relates to Mr. Barnes’ admission of sexual abuse on his child.

Body of Missing Rangely Woman Found in Rio Blanco County

A body of a woman discovered near a Rio Blanco County road has been identified as the Rangely woman that was reported missing earlier this month. 38-year-old Laurie French was discovered by searchers from the Rio Blanco County Sheriff’s Office about 50 yards off the road at mile marker 1.5 on county road 23 on Wednesday, September 16th.

There is a bit of good news in the fire front. Center Creek Trail Fire has shown limited fire behavior and currently poses no threat of moving south. The East Fork Fire however, has caused the Forest Service to modify the closure area. The Blindstream Road is closed from the switchbacks to Rock Creek Road.

The Basin has enjoyed the annual Storytelling Festival for many years but unfortunately, it had to be cancelled last spring due to COVID-19. Reports of a prowler in Duchesne County have many on edge. Based on the reports shared on social media the prowler is allegedly a man, sometimes dressed as the Cat in the Hat, targeting children by tapping on their windows during the late night and early morning hours and in more extreme examples is actually entering bedrooms through windows.

Uintah County issued a press release on Wednesday providing further information on how things will proceed now that three of the Special Service Districts have been combined into one new Special Service District. On August 24th, local leaders met to discuss the future of the Special Service Districts as mineral lease funds have continued to decline.
